Thats just weird, lol. I copied it exactly like it was from the site I got it from. Maybe they put it there because there's no "a" towns in Delaware, lol.

I always wondered how the zip codes were originally assigned. For example, I rew up in 19702 Newark, but 19703 was Claymont. The two places seemed rather far away from each other to be sequential.

It's funny...where I work (la petite academy in hockessin) is 19707, the neighborhood 100 feet away is 19711 (jarrell farms in newark) and a mile or so down the road (pike creek shopping center in wilmington) is 19808...3 zip codes within a mile or so of each other is just crazy!

ZIP codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region. The main town in a region (if applicable) often gets the first ZIP codes for that region; afterward, the numerical order often follows the alphabetical order. Because ZIP codes are intended for efficient postal delivery, there are unusual cases where a ZIP Code crosses state boundaries, such as a military facility spanning multiple states or remote areas of one state most easily serviced from an adjacent state (q.v.).

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!

No rhyme or reason for it other than this is Delaware.

Perhaps I've missed something, but what does Delaware have to do with the allocation of zip codes?

I've been in every state in the country and the zip codes are just as seemingly random in many parts of all of them.

The United States Postal Department began a scheme of postal zone codes in 1944 and has been assigning them ever since they implemented the zip code system several years later.

Now, I don't know about rhyme, but there IS REASON for it. But, it's a secret that only the U. S. Postal Department knows. If any of us find out about it, they'll have to kill us. It would bring an entirely new meaning to the term, "going postal."

Delaware's outstanding and highly secretive General Assembly screws enough things up all by itself. There is hardly any need to blame "zip code" allocations on that august body, the second best that lobby money can buy--second ONLY to the United States Congress.
