Chips Transmit Illness In Rochester, MN More than 20 people who attended a Rochester wedding reception Friday night got sick after eating tortilla chips contaminated with norovirus, possibly from fecal matter. [Emphasis mine. -Py] "Initial reports came through from a member of the wedding party itself, indicating ... a number of people being ill," said Kari Etrheim, public information officer for Olmsted County Public Health. The illness spread after an infected guest grabbed handfuls of chips at the reception hall, Etrheim said. Noroviruses spread largely through food or water contaminated by fecal matter, or through close contact with infected people, according to Mayo-Clinic.com. Anyone who ate chips before the infected guest escaped unscathed. But those who ate them afterward unknowingly risked illness. Health officials kept detailed charts to match illness to foods eaten by guests. "Other foods may have been contaminated as well, but only the chips were statistically significant," said epidemiologist Larry Edmonson. Norovirus usually causes diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting within 24 to 48 hours of exposure, says the Mayo Web site. Symptoms last one to five days, and most people recover without treatment.
So. Frickin'. Gross.
Be a little OCD about washing your hands! It's still the best way to prevent illness.

My Mood: | | | Re: Wash Your Hands! That is soooo disgusting!1 How can you NOT wash your hands?? After working in health care for many years I'm constantly washing my hands. And after I use a public bathroom and wash my hands I'll either use the paper towel or my shirt to open the door. It is just so gross to me that people can walk out of the bathroom without washing their hands. Ugh**shudders**

My Mood: | | | Re: Wash Your Hands! Hand sanitizer is good, but hand washing is better. Did you ever think about the germs on a menu? elevator button, public phone (what's a public phone?) stair rails, door knobs, restaurant chairs, public finger food and on and on...And keep thy hands away from thy face. I always have hand sanitizer and use it after I order and before I eat. If you are visiting someone in the hospital, please wash your hands just before and also after your visit. You can never be too careful. Sorry, I slipped into my EMT role. | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to Crabby For This Useful Post:

My Mood: | | | Re: Wash Your Hands! A couple of years ago, I was on a flight from Manchester, NH to PHL in 1st Class (back then I NEVER flew in the cattle section)...in the seat behind me was Brett Bodine...the NASCAR fans out there probably remember Brett, recently he's been driving the pace car...anyway, after the flight...we were both in the restroom near the gate, as I was washing my hands, he pulls up to the sink, runs his hands through his hair while looking in the mirror, and then heads out. Since he was a lame driver, and it was a Dover race weekend, I stalked him through the terminal, and as he made the turn to go downstairs and retrieve his luggage, I darted passed and said "good luck Brett", he looked up, smiled and then made a gesture as if to extend his hand...I looked down at his paw, looked back up at him, shook my head and walked away... | | The Following User Says Thank You to Raptor For This Useful Post:
