So it is dangerous to get chicken pox as an adult. I do not agree with this vaccine. | Yeah, I agree that vaccinating for chicken pox may not be the best idea, except perhaps in populations that have never been exposed to the disease (similar to what happened in the Americas and the islands of the South Pacific when Europeans inadvertently spread diseases like measles and whooping cough). In that case I think vaccination is necessary.

My Mood: | | | Re: Measles Outbreak: Multi-State I think the chicken pox vaccination is a great idea. Because many parents are opting for it, the disease will not be nearly as widespread as it was when we were kids. My best friend's seven year old daugher doesn't even know what chicken pox are.
We got the disease young and got over it because it was there. Kids in my neighborhood had it, and my Mom knew it was a matter of time until my brother and I came down with it. She checked us for spots when she gave us a bath. We got it and got over it.
Without that exposure, you risk your child contracting the pox as an adult, which has a slew of associated side effects, some of them quite serious.
Better to vaccinate young if you can't guarantee exposure early in life.

My Mood: | | | Re: Measles Outbreak: Multi-State All 3 of my kids have had all of their immunizations. If it can help them prevent a disease I'll risk the potential side effects. The next one I want to discuss with their pediatrician is the one for the girls to prevent HPV. I'm not sure of that one since recently I've heard they are finding more severe side effects. Thanks for the information PY. I had the measles as a child and I was really, really sick. All I remember is my parents putting me in a bathtub to bring my fever down and my mom crying over me. Me fever was so high I actually had what I thought was a very vivid dream, but when I woke up and described it to my mom it turns out it was memories from when I was about 18 months old. I described my nursery, the trailer we lived in, my grandparents farm we lived on and the argument my parents were having that day. I had never seen pictures of any of these places or people and up until that day I don't remember my mom ever talking about my biological father or his family. Freaked my mom out really bad, she wasn't ready for me to know about them since it was a really painful experience for her and my step dad had adopted me at this point. I was about 6 or 7 at the time. Needless to say it was a really weird experience, but I still remember that in very vivid detail.

My Mood: | | | Re: Measles Outbreak: Multi-State My mother had German Measles while she was pregnant with me. I am deaf in one ear and could not have children and God knows what else. I remember getting tons of vaccinations in school. I think it's important to be safe against diseases.

My Mood: | | | Re: Measles Outbreak: Multi-State If we keep immunizing for everything.... Our bodies will not be able to fight off diseases. If there was an immunization for the cold, everyone would run out and get that.... so when the immunizations run out when we are adults, these diseases will be back out an the adults will be giving it to the kids.

Py, oh resident expert on all things disease related,.... don't adults need a booster for MMR? I'm old. I might need a booster. My doctor looked at me funny when I asked about it.
But I go to weird countries. I've had vaccinations for Tdap, Hep A, getting Hep B, getting Typhoid,... I wonder when the MMR vaccine wears off?

I wonder when the MMR vaccine wears off? | The only adults who should get an MMR vaccine are women who are trying to become pregnant, international travelers, those who work in medical facilities, and people working in or attending schools or colleges, or any adult who has not received two doses of the vaccine or had a natural immunity.
You're probably safe Bing. I'd imagine you've either had it, or received two doses of the vaccine.
Anyone worried about their current level of immunity to any disease can request an antibody titer. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Pythoness For This Useful Post: | |

But it couldn't hurt to get a booster right? I'm not sure if I've had the 2nd dose, and I'll be in a few countries over the next year or so. And I might want to get pregnant.... | | The Following User Says Thank You to Bada Bing For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
