Breakthrough drug 'could halt' Alzheimer's

CNN) -- British researchers say a new drug could effectively halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease, offering hope to millions.

The pioneering research -- a joint initiative between the University of Aberdeen in the UK and Singapore-based TauRx Therapeutics -- was announced this week at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD 2008) in Chicago.
The product -- remberTM -- is the first drug to act on the "tangles" discovered by Alois Alzheimer over a century ago. Tangles are made up of the protein, tau, which forms inside nerve cells in the brain.
According to Aberdeen University, the drug works by dissolving these tau fibers to prevent a build up of tangles which destroy nerve cells and neurons critical for memory.
Trials were carried out on 321 people with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease in the UK and Singapore. Patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease were given either 30, 60 or 100mg of the drug or a placebo.
The 60mg dose produced the most pronounced effect, with those with both mild and moderate Alzheimer's experiencing an 81 percent reduction in mental decline after 50 weeks.
Those on rember did not experience a significant decline in their mental function over 19 months, while those on placebo got worse.
Brain imaging data also showed that the drug had its biggest effect in the memory critical parts of the brain where the tangle density is highest.
Don't Miss
In a statement on the university's Web site, Professor Claude Wischik, Chairman of TauRx Therapeutics and Professor of Psychiatric Geratology and Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Aberdeen's Institute of Medical Sciences, who led the research, said: "This is an unprecedented result in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
"We have demonstrated for the first time that it may possible to arrest the progression of this disease by targeting the tangles which are highly correlated with the disease."
Professor Clive Ballard, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, told the British Press Association: "This is a major new development in the fight against dementia.
"It suggests the drug could be over twice as affective as any treatment that is currently available."
If further trials prove successful, the drug could be available by 2012.

Wow, wouldn't it be great to take that illness off the list.

To slowly loose your past and all your experiences that have made you, YOU (not to mention what it does to family/friends).

I'm not too shy to admit, that scares the hell out of me.

Wish they had something like this year ago, when my great uncle was diagnosed with both Alzheimer's and Parkinsons.. Seeing a very healthy, happy man diminish like he has is extemely heart breaking..
It still kills me to think how he is now, compared to what he was while I was growing up...

I'm not trying to be funny, but it won't be too scary for you because you literally will not know what is going on. By the time my father was diagnosed, I'm sure he really did not fully comprehend what was going on. But you are spot on - the pain and anguish family and friends experience is excruciating. When they call Alzheimer's the "long goodbye", nothing describes it better. Although it's the family saying goodbye to someone that ends up not knowing who you are.

My Dad held out to "celebrate" his 50th anniversary with my Mom. And then died 3 days later.

Sorry to be so morbid... Alzheimer's scares me too, but only because I don't want my wife to have to deal with it after seeing what my Mom went through.

This disease, IMO, needs more attention and funding. People tend to think why should we invest research in people that are so old. I think anyone who has worked their whole life deserves a retirement that they can remember. (never mind the great burden on the healthcare system as the number of America's senior citizens grows rapidly).

Okay, that's enough... back to my jokes now.

Re: Breakthrough drug 'could halt' Alzheimer's

I worked in geriatrics for many years. I truly loved that aspect of health care. The stories some of the people I cared for had were just awesome. Working with Alzheimer's patients was really difficult for me though. It is so hard to see an adult that was once articulate and self sufficient change into a person that is often confused and lost in every day life. To me that was one of the hardest things to deal with, that slow loss and watching the families suffer too.
My grandmother died of a brain tumor that slowly robbed her of her memories. It was quicker than Alzheimer's usually takes, but just as devastating when she didn't know who her family was and was so confused. I so hope this treatment works. When you live a full life you deserve to leave it with all of your memories intact and hopefully a smile on your face.

My grandmother died from complications of Alzheimer's. I thank God everyday that she was still pretty with-it till the end.

It's the worst to watch vibrant, talented, funny people become a confused, frustrated shell of themselves. I hope I never have to see it happen again. 2012 isn't soon enough.

Re: Breakthrough drug 'could halt' Alzheimer's

I was a live-in caretaker for an elderly lady whose family lived right next door. She was supposed to be on meds for alzenheimers, but the family didnt want to pay for them, and they had the money, it wouldnt have hurt them at all. So here I was trying to raise two kids and take care of a woman who would just start beating me in the head and pulling my hair because she thought I was a burglar, locking the kids out and everything, I didnt last very long there, believe me. Wish this stuff would have been around then, I would have pitched a fit until they bought it for her. She was such a sweet lady and a very interesting person when she was 'herself.'.
