Re: Brain Eating Amoebas

Has anyone else ever read the book Beauty by Bill Wallace?

It's a boy meets horse children's book that is a real tear jerker. It's set in Oklahoma, and the boy's grandfather shows him a swimming hole on the ranch property, but warns him that after he's finished swimming he always has to put these drops in his ears because of this amoeba.

Weird. I'd never heard of it anywhere outside of that book.

This type of thing has been going on since just about forever. We have not heard about it simply because it has not been a major problem in OUR lives. But this is going to change over the next 50- to 60-years.

It's part of the consequences of global temperature increases--no matter the cause. I emphasize "no matter the cause" because just mentioning global warming is enough to make some people assume a fetal position.

Earth's temperature is increasing. This is a fact with which most legitimate climatologists agree. Whether it is happening as part of nature's normal cyclical process or whether humans are the cause is immaterial.

It's most likely a combination of both. And even that part coming from the human race may be unavoidable to the tune of nearly 60%. But even this is immaterial.

Instead of planning for a rough ride as the problem begins to manifest itself as in the case described by this post, humans will spend ALL of the time arguing over who is right until it becomes so critical that we'll have to take drastic steps just to survive.

In the long run, if we are not wiped out by some unavoidable cosmic disaster, we'll certainly increase our odds of wiping ourselves out through our own stupidity.

We'll be reading about more of these things. Trust me, some of the consequences of planetary temperature increases are stuff that we used to base our science fiction on.

Global warming isn't an automatic human species wipe out scenario. However, if we don't remove it from the political arena and stop trying to play gotcha with it, it will be.

Regards,

Joe Walther

Re: Brain Eating Amoebas

This was cut and pasted from the article:
"Obviously, this causes a lot of damage. And it happens fast: Victims usually die seven to 10 days after infection, although symptoms may not appear for up to 14 days"
If people die at 7-10 days how do the symptoms take up to 14 days to appear?? Wouldn't you already be dead?? Guess I'm not reading it right.

Re: Brain Eating Amoebas

I'm reading it as in, most of the time, onset of symptoms is within 1-2 days and you're gone by the 7-10th.

But SOMETIMES, in very resilient individuals (or perhaps with really weak amoebas?), onset of symptoms may not start until 14 days after infection, in which case, infected individuals probably have a lower mortality rate.

I must admit Joe, I have never heard it put that way, frankly I will probably steal that quote and use it for my own
