The maker of BlackBerry devices says its customers in North America are experiencing delays receiving e-mail.

The company, Research In Motion Ltd., said Thursday it has technicians working on the problem.
The company says users are still able to make phone calls, browse the Internet and send and receive text messages.
The last time RIM's BlackBerry service had a major outage was in February 2008, when an upgrade to the wireless system apparently caused a three-hour service disruption that affected millions of people. source

blackberry is the ultimate business phone, this is their only weakness is if the BIS servers go down you are SOL on emails. happens rarely though so not a big deal. RIM did a lot of R&D and invested a whole lotta money into getting their service the way it is and it is far superior (email wise) then any other smartphone ever in sending and receiving emails.

Most business use Bes (check your carrier Bis is usually 30 Bes is like 45 a month) Bis is mostly for personal or very small companies. We are having no issues with our Crackberries

BES is an internal company thing, so of course it would not be affected by this outage.

I was pointing out that BIS is not really used for large companies so that is not a weakness of the Crackberries for business

My BIS emails are finally coming through on VZW.

BIS has been down for a few hours for all North American Carriers again. No ETR.

Edit: Its BIS, BES, BBM, and Internet. They lost the whole sha-bang. But they released a new version of BBM during the outage. You just can't download it from the BB. Such a tease.

ang's storm went awol last night and she called vzw and cussed them up and down. they said they are working out details for compensation for customers affected.

I have internet and e-mail back but still no BBM

RIM Statement - December 23rd

A service interruption occurred Tuesday that affected BlackBerry customers in the Americas. Message delivery was delayed or intermittent during the service interruption. Phone service and SMS services on BlackBerry smartphones were unaffected. Root cause is currently under review, but based on preliminary analysis, it currently appears that the issue stemmed from a flaw in two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger (versions 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56) that caused an unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure. RIM has taken corrective action to restore service.

RIM has also provided a new version of BlackBerry Messenger (version 5.0.0.57) and is encouraging anyone who downloaded or upgraded BlackBerry Messenger since December 14th to upgrade to this latest version which resolves the issue. RIM continues to monitor its systems to maintain normal service levels and apologizes for any inconvenience to customers.

A couple people were freaking out at my work because of this, lol.

Haven't noticed any. but then again I don't have or need a Blackberry, unless it is the kind you can eat.
