| | | Ok I know I sound like a total idiot, but someone throw me a bone My DVD player is acting like a VCR acts when the heads need to be cleaned. Is there some sort of cleaning maintenance that needs to be done on a DVD player as well? If so, is this something that I can purchase at a video store? Thank you in advance for not making fun of the technologicaly disabled!

| | | How old is the player? There is no friction involved when the lazer is reading the info on the dvd as compared to a vcr where the tape is pulled across the player heads causing them to get dirty after time. It's rare the lazer ever gets dirty. If the dvd is skipping or jumping to different parts of the dvd and doing the same thing with all the dvds, the lazer is probably bad/worn. They average life of the lazer is 5 years. That's why I asked how old it is. If the picture is fuzzy or not very clear, check the connections in the back of the player and the back of the tv. Sometimes just wiggling the wires in the back will answer that question for you. If the picture clears up while you're wiggling the wires, it's the connection. Those kits you get to "clean" the dvd player are just a gimmick that do nothing. If the lazer is bad, buy a new dvd player. They're very cheap nowadays.
One other thing. Never, ever buy "combo" units. Always get a seperate dvd, vcr (if you can find a vcr) and tv. Some people think they're getting a bargain but there more trouble than they're worth. Especially the
dvd/vcr/tv combos. One component goes bad and you have to send the whole thing out or you're stuck with the extra room the dead component takes. Also when you think about it, where is the quality being sacrificed in the combo players? In the TV? The VCR or the DVD player? Buy seperate. It's easier to deal with, replace/fix and you know what you paid for. Good luck. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Curly For This Useful Post:

| | You're right Frog, I stand corrected. Apparently some those cleaning discs are supposed to have small cleaning bristles to wipe off the lens. Can't hurt. I based the reply on my experience with CD and DVD players. All the ones I've had never malfunctioned from a dust problem. Of course I've used one of those pressurized air cans for blowing out the inside of the player before. | | |

| | It's doing the skipping and stopping in the middle of the DVD thing. I probably need to buy a new DVD player. I did buy a lens cleaner and The Nightmare Before Christmas last night at Walmart. However, my daughter was loading the bags into the car while I was putting my son in the car and left that bag in the cart. Needless to say, when we went back the bag was gone. Now I have no lens cleaner and no DVD. | | |

| | | Is the DVD all smudged up?? My daughter handles the DVDs and smudges them all up. I use a microfiber cloth to clean the DVD.. Usually works like a charm.

| | Umm DCG... The lil snot monster put a "pb n j" in the slot where the DVD goes...... might be a problem......
Go buy a new DVD player, and keep the VCR till it goes south... then buy a VCR....
Curly's correct by saying that the combo machines are just cheaply made units that when broken, both units are virtually useless...

| | | DCG... Where is you DVD player? If it's under a cable box or on top of a TV it could be getting hot and causing it to act up. Move it away from other hot components. If it's in an enclosed cabinet, keep the doors open while using it, etc.
I have been know to use windex on my Dvds to remove smudges... it works but it also makes people freak out when I do it. Anyone else use windex on their Dvds? | | The Following User Says Thank You to hockey For This Useful Post:

| | | It is possible that the disc is scratched or has finger prints on it. You can buy disc repair kit for about 20. It basically just takes a thin layer off of the disc and removes minor scratches. I bought one about 8 years ago and it has saved me several hundred dollars in repairing rather than replacing dvd's and cd's. | | The Following User Says Thank You to gbowen For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
