We get great service every time. I use my credit card, so the tip always gets posted on the card (and they know it). Funny thing - the tip never shows up on my credit card tab at Olive Garden. Other places make sure they get that tip, but not them.
That was also a point I left out of the Perkin's story. I did say we were regulars, and everyone knew that. I always tipped according to service, usually too much when they did well. That is what was odd. "Dora" was one waitress who always did well, and got tipped well. She even had the coffee pot to us with the menu. It was unbelieveable when that day fell apart from the moment we walked in the door, which I suppose lead to us being tolerant up until the food was so bad. |

My Mood: | | | Re: Michael's --- Newark, DE I have been told by many waitresses, that they prefer the tip not be added to the credit card, bec it is up to the managers discretion what part of the tip they get, if they get any of it.... I have asked waitstaff which they prefer and all preferred the cash.

My Mood: | | | Re: Michael's --- Newark, DE The waiters always prefer cash because you technically can get away without claiming all of it for taxes (disclaimer: if in fact you want to subject yourself to possible legal penalties). If a tip is on the credit card, you have to claim 100% of that tip on your taxes because now there is a written record that could be the subject of an audit. With a cash tip, no one can prove how much of a tip you got.
At least that's how it worked when I waited tables back in the day.

The thing about "manager's discretion" is partly true. If the restaurant has tip sharing, the manager gets to decide. But if a waitstaff runs a tab on a credit card, they have their own ID. Unless the restaurant has tip sharing, they get the tip - or the IRS will catch the manager for breaking the law. If the restaurant has tip sharing, sure, the waitress can pocket the whole thing. But, to me that is more dubious than not reporting your tips for taxes. |

My Mood: | | | Re: Michael's --- Newark, DE When I was a server on the boardwalk at Victorias, (Rehoboth), I had a party of ten come in and as I was seating them, the spokesperson asked if gratuity was added to the check, I replied yes, on parties of 6 or more, that was norm, (we couldnt choose to leave it out, we weren't allowed). He asked me, very nicely, that if they had a problem with my service, would I be willing to forgo the gratuity? I replied of course, that if my service were bad, I wouldnt want it anyway. The same party of ten came back the next night and requested me as their server, they also, both time, left twice the amount the tip should have been. I've NEVER worked harder for a table in my life, but it was worth it! I've also used this tactic as well when with a group eating where the gratuity was automatically included. You wouldnt believe the difference it makes in service. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Decent For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
