My wife and I did the Caffe last night. A great test of a restaurant is how they perform under pressure - yesterday was move-in day at UD, so the place was PACKED! Our table was ready when we arrived, so no waiting...service was flawless. Although, our server advised that they did tap a new keg which was reportedly warm (so stay clear of the draft beer for a week or two! Keg'd beer is not heat pasteurized). Nice wine list - not over the top - some cellar selections which looked less expensive than I've seen on eBay - we agreed on an Alsace which would balance my filet and her pasta quite well.
We did a buffalo mozzarella app - AMAZING! 3 huge lightly breaded and fried hunks + a slice on a bed of field greens. The house salad that followed was my only disappointment of the evening - the problem wasn't the greens or the gorgonzolla dressing - it was the fact that everything was placed on a plate that must have come right out of the dishwasher - the plate wasn't warm, it was HOT! But who needs salad when there's beef on the way?
My filet was AWESOME - I'm usually tentative about ordering filet from an Italian restaurant, but this was a miraculous decision, I have not had beef this smooth in 4 or 5 years, when I did some work in South Dakota - covered in lump crabmeat, it cut with a butter knife. The mashed taters were common and the asparagus al dente. But who cares, the beef was incredible!
My wife's seafood pasta was chock full of crabmeat, but only had three shrimps...kinda scimpy on the shrimpies.
And of course we had to have some gelato...and it was VERY good!
Three stars out of four in my book, I'll look forward to going back when school isn't in session!
