Jose's Border Cafe
It has been a while since I had ventured into the depths of the DELDOT Monster - the Christiana Mall area. The poorly designed interchange of I95, DE1, and DE7...Churchman's Crossing, Metroform...it's a mess.
Two things we don't have in Brandywine Hundred....a Bugaboo Steakhouse and a Border Cafe. The Border Cafe has the most appropriate sign of any restaurant, it's visible from the traffic fiasco and all of the nearby hotels - it simply reads "EAT". At the Border Cafe, finding a good meal (actually, a good, LARGE meal) is not a problem.
Like most Tex-Mex joints, they start you off with Chips and Salsa. Don't be afraid to ask for more.
The Quesadillas are OVER sized. By itself, it's a meal. Steak, Chicken, or the Cajun Combo (crawfish and shrimp) NEED to be shared - or not.
Two salads REALLY stand out. The beef and blue (or black and blue) - steak and blue cheese crumbles with a good dose of tomatoes and blacken'd (Cajun) spices over iceberg lettuce...and the Chicken Fajita salad which is basically a pile of chicken, fried onions and peppers laying on lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese.
The seafood enchillada is probably the most decadent item on the menu. Shellfish in a cream sauce wrapped in tortillas. It's like a Tex Mex Alfredo dish. All of the fajitas - cajun, chicken, and steak that passed our table just made your mouth water. The gumbo was a nice surprise also - not on the level of the "Blue Parrot" on Union Street - but good enough to order again!
Throw in the standard Mexican Beers...Corona, Monte Negro, Dos Xies and there's no need for dessert!
Totally easy on the wallet also...except for the seafood enchillada and fajitas, I think everything else was under $8.
