Re: What should and should not be leashed?

I'm against leashes on a perfectly healthy child. I think it could hinder their own decision making and early development. I agree with all of you guys point of view.

I wouldn't put a leash on my son. I won't feel right tugging on him as i'm going a different direction than him. I'm very strict with my son being close to me. I know it only takes one second to lose a child. I avoid large crowds at all costs. I don't take him to amusement parks or anything of that magnitude. He's been to carnivals, parades, and malls.

For me. I think this is the time of his life that he needs to learn self reliance. I teach him phone numbers, addresses, scream my name if he doesn't see me. If he doesn't learn it now. I couldn't feel comfortable with him attending Kindergarten.

I would and have leashed in a heart beat. If they can't listen they may be leashed. The stroller is an easier answer and more socially acceptable but I would leash.

IDK....but my husband and I have had this conversation before. It's a scary situation. Is it environmental? Is it genetic? Is it all the frankenfood? Medications and anoculations? Is it something that pregnant women are being exposed to? Maybe the prenatal vitamins? It's very disturbing!

Every morning I think about Alzheimer's when I put my on deodorant/anti-perspirant. I've heard talk that the aluminum used in anti-perspirants has been linked to certain diseases, particularly Alzheimer's. Scary b/c just about every person uses this product daily. WTH?

Re: What should and should not be leashed?

Geez....I've never heard that. Now I'm going to be scared every morning. I'm already freaked about Alzheimer's as it is. I am always forgetting words. It drives me nuts. I went to the neurologist the other day about my migraines and he said that it's due to my medication, but I still worry because my Grandmother had Alzheimer's.

Re: What should and should not be leashed?

I absolutely see all of your points about safety and I think they are absolutely valid. Remember that kid a couple of years ago that was snatched from the mall in England by those teenagers and they threw him over a bridge onto some train tracks?

I think that's why everyone at the grocery store HATES me and thinks I'm the worse mother in the world because the entire time I'm there I'm screaming DRAKE JESSICA GET OVER HERE. I don't let them out of my site for a SECOND. Me personally, I just could never put a leash on a child. I'll never get past that leashes are meant for animals....not humans and especially not for my humans.

My grandfather had Alzheimer's.

I'm always looking for alternative products but they just don't work as well. Not like we can stop using deodorants and walk around funking everything up, right?

I'll let you know if I find a product w/o the aluminum.

FYI, I haven't seen any evidence that this is even a fact. We can't be afraid of everything.

Re: What should and should not be leashed?

My daughter never wandered.... she was always under foot. Very shy and very weary. My son is the exact opposite.... talks to anyone, anywhere. Strikes up conversations with anyone who will listen.

My secret trick for keeping him nearby and behaved..... I keep his hair cut short ...but not too short. I literally tell the barber to leave enough for me to grab. I use my entire hand on his head and grab a fist full and hold it until he corrects his behavior. (this is usually pretty darn quick b/c it really hurts) The bonus is that it doesn't even look like I'm hurting him. I can do it right in front of people and they are none the wiser but my son immediately knows he better stop whatever it is he is doing.

It's a cool trick for all Mom's of young boys.... I highly recommend the "subtle hair pull". Now that he's 8, I don't ever have to do this... if I even make like I'm going to... he stops.
