How about us single parents that are on a fixed income? I'm not okay with a hike that high. My vote is no. If it fails, they'll come back with another offer. Exactly why the Brandywine ref failed........ I suggest they stop paying the superindentant 6 figures a year and anticipate a budget better. $11 million in unanticipated expenses since the last ref? What he hell is that???? Red Clay hopes for best, braces for worst in vote All-day kindergarten part of funding request

Red Clay schools Superintendent Robert Andrejewski won't predict the outcome of the district's $17.5 million operating referendum Thursday.
"It's too close to call," he said. "So the pitch I'm making is that every vote counts, and we will live by whatever the community decides."
Andrejewski also looks at the Brandywine School District's narrow referendum defeat last month as a possible motivator to bring the vote out, not a harbinger of what could happen to Red Clay.
"I'm asking the community to think about whom the real losers are here [if voters defeat the referendum], and it's the kids in the long run," he said. "They get one shot for their education, and I think we should give them the best shot they can get." http://delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs....0411/1006/NEWS |

Red Clay School District officials are going back to the drawing board following Thursday's defeat of a 17 Million dollar referendum.
WDEL's Ken Grant has more. Video Here
More than 11,000 votes were cast in the Red Clay School District - and more than 62-hundred, or 56 percent, voted against the referendum.
Superintendent Bob Andrzejewski says the district will now have to leave several vacant positions unfilled and cut back on after-school programs.
And, he says, there will be another referendum next year.

I am also trying to rally support for the Brandywine referendum on June 4th. |

My Mood: | | | Re: Red Clay ref......... I don't live in the Red Clay district either, but I've commented before on GL's post for the Brandywine ref. Personally, I would vote in favor of a similar referendum in my district. The cost of a measure that is somewhere between 20 and 30 bucks seems worth it when it goes to the school system. Yes the salary of a superintendant is high - it should be. The jobs should be going to well qualified people who work their way to a doctorate level and have plenty of experience in education. We wouldn't say that salary is high for a medical doctor, a lawyer, or anyone else equally qualified for their position.
Regardless of the outcomes of such referendums, I still think it's a crying shame that we have to vote on giving our schools the money they need. No one asks me to vote on how or if the war should be funded. No one asks me to vote on which roads should be widened, which beaches should be dredged, or the spending of $265 million dollars of undocumented spending as of the August 2006 audit.
What other free, public serving institution needs to hold bake sales to buy computers?

Forgive me for my late response, Ive been out of town for a couple weeks. But in all serious it statements like this is why referendums fail. "Im not OK with paying $266 more a year". If you look at the big picture thats about 20 bucks a month. Are people really not willing to spend that for their children to get a better education? Then they complain when theres 35 kids in a class and there is no longer a music or art program because the district cant afford to hire more teachers. |

They should have budgetted their spending the same way I do. They spent $11 MILLION that was not anticipated for!!!!! $11 MILLION........ did you catch that part??? The money they want isnt going to give my child a better education, its to cover the screw up that they have already caused. So agree with me or dont......... I havent heard from anyone that actually voted. |

On the 11 million dollar issue... a few years ago when RCCSD passed their initial referendum it called for renovations to almost all of their schools. As with almost all construction projects costs tend to run over. I'm not saying it's OK, but what are you going to do, have unfinished projects? Heres a link that discusses their '07 budget. http://www.redclay.k12.de.us/Budget/Budget2007.htm
If I wasn'y 400 miles away on the day of the vote I would have voted yes. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
