Well that's a relief anyway. For some reason I was thinking (but wasn't sure) that he had gotten probation and I was like, "Iiiiieeee, this is not looking good."

Now saying that.....At sixteen years old, you should know better than to jump a fence, enter another persons property, and take something that is knowingly NOT his......

I am biting my tongue by not saying what I would do with him if he was my son.....

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

I hope they don't decide to charge him as an adult, but you should warn him that it is a possibility. This needs to be the last time he does something like this.

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

I have no kids so I have no advice to give or have any clue what I would do if I was in your situation. All I know is everyone makes mistakes especially at that age. I know I've made plenty of them. Unfortunately, you can't be with your kids at all times to make sure they make the right choices. Hopefully, he will learn from his mistakes. Hey, at least he didn't hurt anybody.

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

He will not be tried as an adult unless he is an adult. They only try juveniles as adults in violent crimes. This is a property crime.

If you are the guardian, you will see the warrant in family court. I'll wager that those storage units were not opened when he arrived but they were opened when he left.

Each storage unit would be a charge of burglary 3rd which is a felony. Each storage unit could be 3 felonies (burglary, conspiracy and theft if it is over $1000.00 stolen) If a lock was broken, it would be another charge of criminal mischief which is a misdemeanor.

Unless he has a bad record, he's not going to jail. He'll probably have to write an essay and do community service and be on probation. Family court generally goes easy on first time offenders.

Good luck.

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

I'm surprised no one else has said who left these storage units unlocked ? Seems like they were asking for trouble. As a part of growing up seems we all make some stupid mistakes and your son had a big one. Fortunately it should go off his record when he turns 18 . Let's hope he learned a lesson.

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

It's the going back for the stuff that gets me.

I can take myself back to 16, walking home at night with a buddy. We see some unlocked storage units..."Hey, check it out. Wonder what's inside?"

What starts out as mischievous adventure spirals quickly into a potential felony when we come across all this cool stuff. Then we hear the cops, bust ass out of there, and talk giddily about it for the rest of the night.

Going back for the stuff isn't some mischievous "fun" that got out of hand.

It's a deliberate and premeditated plan to steal. It's purely criminal. No way to chalk that up to youthful hijinks.

If it had been me, and I was stupid enough to go back for the stuff, and got pinched, my whole story would have been:

"We saw some open units, decided to look around. We put together a pile of stuff and then heard the police and ran. After a while, we realized we had done wrong, and that the people wouldn't know where we hid their stuff. So we came back to put the stuff back where it came from before anybody even knew it was missing. Guess we should have just left it hidden."

I'd take it to the grave.

Edit: Of course, if the cops waited until we had a sack over our shoulder and were heading towards home...welllll

Re: My Son and His Amazingly STUPID Decision

I'm so sorry to hear about this Decent. Let us know if there's anything (short of criminal activity) we can do to to help.

Maybe a few weeks for the boy at Uncle Tom's Boot Camp®? (just kidding folks...I'm sure Decent could use an actual laugh right now).
