2. "Non-classroom staff" reductions: district office; positions working out of district office (administrative and non-administrative); positions in buildings but not directly in classrooms (currently we believe we will need to cut 92 positions)
3. Other state-funded programs (such as the Early Childhood Assistance Program and Limited English Proficiency) (currently we believe this will mean a reduction of seven staff positions)
4. Classroom teachers (currently we believe we will need to cut 24 teachers)
I am also hearing that Full Day Kindergarten is also not going to be an option or that parents will have to pay for full day.

no i know the seriousness of all this, and it is really a bad situation. One of my co-worker's live in the BSD and although he doesn't have kids in school anymore he is very up on the news and things like this, school stats, etc. When i told him i was thinking of moving out of New Castle (colonial school district) he said his area would make a great choice with my kid getting closer to school age. he gave me some stats and i was impressed, so was Angela, now though, with these cuts it seems those stats may decline in the future if nothing is done. |

I still think BSD will be better off than other districts since they passed that huge referendum last year.
Chase, you should consider Chadds Ford/Unionville SD..... that's an amazing district. |

My Mood: | | | Re: Delaware Schools I just found out that Appoquinimink is in good shape financially; they are going to breeze through these cuts. From what I understand they are CONSIDERING cutting some of the extra programs, nothing important, just a few extras like afterschool intro to computers or the like. It all depends on where you live and how wealthy the district is as to whether or not the kids will suffer. Christina's past has caused us to be in a horrible position to attempt to deal with this kind of blow.

I've been really worried for my kids, but at least they will be close to our home and hopefully things will improve soon. Just wondering how these cuts will effect the promises of the referendum we just passed though. I thought all day k was one of the things promised for next year? My oldest will be at Kirk next year the first 6th grade class there. We'll see how it goes. I really don't want to go through the whole "let's move" thing again. Plus I don't think we could afford to now anyway, not sure we could sell this house in this economy. Plus I really love where we live. It's just the school issue that worries me a lot. Every time I think things are improving a little it seems we get slammed again in this district. I'm surprised Dr. Lowery doesn't have a huge ulcer by now!

My Mood: | | | Re: Delaware Schools My family is from Delaware County, PA and I have always wondered why the property and school taxes are so high up there. I never really understood until just a few years ago that they really do have some incredible schools and school programs there. The property taxes being so cheap here have been what has kept us from relocating to there, but now I am seeing a new light. Because of all the school problems I am being forced to put my daughter in a school that costs $4800 a year and in the meantime I am going to be looking for a solution for the following school year. I have to say that I actually feel like moving there and paying more property and school tax for a better education for my daughters actually equilvents staying here and paying low taxes and high private school tuitions. In fact we may actually save money if we made a move.
