Re: Child doesn't like his teacher?

My daughters least favorite teacher was the one teacher that she learned the most from in all her years of school so far. The teacher was a retired college level English teacher that decided to come back and teach elementary (6th grade). My daughter did a whole lot of complaining that year but her DSTP scores were off the chart high and her reading level jumped significantly that spring. She still applies the things she learned from that teacher (writing reports, taking better notes and how to study for tests).

I'm glad I made her suffer through that class.
Most of my experience with kids who don't like their teachers usually translates to hard work and/or tough discipline.

Re: Child doesn't like his teacher?

Hey! I wonder if that was the same English teacher my son had in sixth grade. Sounds like it is. At the beginning of the school year he said he and every other student hated this teacher. Turns out it was b'c she was so hard on the students. Now he's in grad school at Penn State and when the conversation has come up about her, he says he appreciates all the work she made him do!

Re: Child doesn't like his teacher?

I had a problem in first grade where my teacher disliked me and I disliked my teacher.

Luckily my preschool teacher mother is very patient and of the "everything can be worked out if we talk about it" mentality.

She set up a meeting privately with my teacher, who informed her that I was too talkative and interfered with others work. Upon more questioning it turns out that I was finishing my work too quickly (and correctly) and that I needed extra activities or work/practice to keep me challenged and occupied. The talking and interfering was just my way of attempting to help others complete their task.

Thanks mom! I joined my schools Advanced/Gifted program for 1st-6th graders where I found many lifelong friends...people that were just like me. The class seemed more like games and it was one of the most positive experiences I can remember from my entire K-12 experience.

It lead to honors classes and Advanced placement tests in junior and senior high, where it no longer felt like a challenge, but more of a habit to strive for more.

Confrontation seemed to really work to dig in to why we each felt the way we felt. I'm glad my mom had the guts to step in and not be intimidated to see why things didn't feel right.

Re: Child doesn't like his teacher?

My youngest son didnt like most of his teachers, just the ones who wouldnt let him get away with everything, lol. I'd call a parent teacher conference and make him sit in on it. He was a very hyper and distracted kid, he made it hard on his teachers.

The only time I ever really had a problem with a teacher was when he was in the 9th grade and a substitute took it upon himself to grab my son by the arm and pull him out of chair. Not just his arm, but the arm that just had the cast taken off of it after a compound fracture. I went to the school, I didnt give a damn about the law or anything, I wanted to beat the hell out of him. The principal was cool, he calmed me down and talked me out of it by telling me we'd take him to the school board. I called about 20 parents and they each called a bunch of other parents and it turns out over half of them had problems with this teacher. On the day I was supposed to go talk to the board, I had a lot of company. The teacher was fired.

I still wanna beat the hell out of him.

Okay... I have asked a few times in the past, and gotten no response..... So, I will ask again...
Could you link us to the publications where you have posted the material you have used us to help write, it would be nice to see our work in publication, and if they are, would you be so kind as to link the publications to us( TalkDelaware.com) so we can at least get some credit for it and help boost our forum numbers?

Thanks in advance, 19720
