| Re: Autistic Kid "Voted Out" Of His Kindergarten Class LOL. Okay. Paraphrasing here.
This lady's 5 year old son, Alex is currently in the process of being diagnosed with autism (asperger's specifically). She goes to pick him up one day and instead of coming from his classroom, he's coming from the nurse's office and he's really upset. When she asks him why he's upset, he says that the teacher and the kids in the class decided that they didn't want him there anymore and made him leave. They "voted him out of class."
When she asked the nurse, the nurse said, "Go talk to the teacher," so she did. And I guess this teacher was ballsy enough to tell her exactly what had happened.
She stood him up in front of the class, made every kid in the class take turns talking about what they didn't like about Alex, and then they took a vote to see if he should be voted out of class. It was 14-2 that he should. 2 kids said they wanted him to stay, one was his only friend. But the teacher went back to them and asked them repeatedly until they gave in to the pressure and voted him out, too. After the vote, the teacher asked Alex how he felt, to which he resonded, "I feel sad." Then she sent him to sit in the nurse's office. According to the interview, he asked to go sit with the principal (who, from the interview and article, seems to have been more sympathetic to him than the teacher), and the teacher told him, "No. They don't want you there either."
Later, at home, she hears him in his room repeating, "I'm not special, I'm not special, I'm not special," over and over again.
Now, let it be said that the principal of this school is the person who suggested she start the process of having Alex tested for ASD, and the principal, teacher and mother had had meetings to discuss his problems before, so the teacher was fully aware of everything going on with this kid before she did this.
Now when she tries to drop her other child at the same school, Alex starts screaming as they approach.
The good news is this teacher has been suspended pending an investigation into the events.
The bad news is that the state of Florida thinks this is not emotional abuse of a child. |
