7year old bedtime

what do you feel is a good bed time for a 7yo child?

my daughter who comes here every other week on saturday nights. i put her to bed at 8. i usually come in and read a book to her till about 8:30. so she really dont go to sleep till after 8:30.

am i wrong for making her go to bed at that time? her mother basically jumped my case when i picked her up saturday and told me that she dont go to bed till 10. SORRY this is my house and i set my own rules. then when my wife took her back she got on her about it too.

Re: 7year old bedtime

I don't have children, but when I do, I plan on following the bedtime schedule my parents set for my brother and I.

At seven, I was in bed at 7:30 on school nights, and I could read until 8:00, when it was lights off time.

On weekends, I was in bed at 8:00, and could read until 8:30, when it was lights out. From time to time I could sweet talk my Mom and Dad for a little extra reading time on weekends, but the in-bed time was firm.

There is very little seven year old appropriate TV on after 8:00 or so, and I think that was their reasoning.

Edit: No offense to your ex, but I think 10:00 for a seven year old is RIDICULOUS! During the week there are times that I go to bed at 10:00, and I can get by on about half as much sleep.

In the summer it should be 9:00, it is not even dark at 8:00.Well that's my opinion for what it's worth.

Re: 7year old bedtime

I had prior to this thought about sending her at 8:30 and then reading till 9. but 10 is WAY out of line for her age

Re: 7year old bedtime

My daughter just turned 8 a couple months ago.

I'm with Rosie....her schedule at 7 was my schedule at 7..on school nights.

On weekends, my folks didn't care, really. Sometimes I'd fall asleep at 9...sometimes 11. But I was a real good kid. You wouldn't know I was in the room if you didn't see me.

-----

My 7 year old didn't get up for school until 7:30.

We let her stay up until 9:00 on school nights. She usually reads till about 9:30, and then falls asleep.

She gets 10 hours of sleep a night. No 7 year old needs more than that. No 7 year old.

Then she gets a complete breakfast from 7:30 till 8 am, gets dressed for school from 8 till 8:30, and we're at school by 8:45.

On weekends, I let her stay up as long as she wants (meaning...until 11 if she's watching something with us or playing a game with us).

She gets a lot of breaks because she's been an only child her whole life. If she grew up with siblings, I'm 100% sure that they ALL would have much stricter bedtimes.

But with just 1...you can handle their eccentricities, I guess.

Re: 7year old bedtime

Each kid is different. If I had tried to put Steph to bed at 7 or 8, there'd be a battle.

Come on! It's summer vacation!! Why do you need a bedtime?

well let me fill in a little here. the mother decided not to tell me i had a daughter till she was almost 4. not till about 6 months ago was i allowed to see her more than an hour a week. during that time she was in school and trying to maintain a sleep schedule i thought was appropiate. and yes your right its summer break and i had planned on extending her time some but i still feel that 10 is too late
