I just opened my 401K statement

Hope told me not to but I had to see

From July 1st to October 1st I lost $8,699.00

My plan was good, retire before I was 50
Move up the the mountains
live a simple life

that is all I wanted

Re: I just opened my 401K statement

Naomi, you did not "lose" anything. your value may have dipped but you did not cash out your 401K so you did not lose any money. the value of our 401k's are going to go up again, guaranteed.
it's like buying stock. you buy 5 shares of XYZ stock at $10 a share for a total of $50. thru the years the value of the stock rises and falls. but until you SELL the stock, you do not gain or lose anything.

Re: I just opened my 401K statement

I opened our 401k statement last week and hugged my husband. He was playing around with the diversification on our account and accidentally put it all in company stock and the bond market. He had almost nothing at all in the stock market. His company stock doubled in value (it's beening aquired) and we made money. I was thinking there was going to be a puke fest in my future.
Now he has to go back and do something about that company stock before it tanks.

My dad keeps reminding me that the money he is losing in investments is my inheritence. Yippee - I thought I was just getting a garage with a bunch of old cars and tools. There may be a cool $20 in it for me too.

Re: I just opened my 401K statement

The envelope that our 401K statements arrive in should come stamped with a big red warning mark : DO NOT OPEN WITHOUT ALCOHOL IN ARM'S REACH.
