Bernanke Talks Of New Stimulus Package

Fed chief backs second economic stimulus

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben S. Bernanke yesterday said it would be appropriate for Congress to enact a second stimulus package designed to give consumers, home buyers and businesses better access to credit.

Mr. Bernanke made the pitch for more fast-acting, economic relief in testimony before the House Budget Committee, saying "extraordinary tightening in credit conditions has played a central role in the slowdown."

Economists agree that making more money available to borrow on better terms would stimulate the recession-bound economy. But they caution that availability of credit is only part of the solution. READ MORE

What are your thoughts on getting a second stimulus check? What would you spend it on? Would you pay down debt? Make a big ticket purchase like a computer or TV? Or would you save it and use it for everyday spending like food and gas?

I'm sure we'll blow it on something for the house. We want to make our garage (which was an crappy office for the old owners) into a much nicer office and exercise room. I'm sure we could use the money in there.

Re: Bernanke Talks Of New Stimulus Package

Should have given the money to the people before they decided to bail out private companies. IMO

I'll take it. By the way are the people going to receive dividends from the companies the people invested in?

That's true. I do think that we didn't get enough. I'm not asking for a handout, but if companies can get what they need. The people should be helped as much as possible short of a welfare type scenario....

I think financial education should begin very early. Monetary theory should be required to graduate school.

Re: Bernanke Talks Of New Stimulus Package

I think what we have is a printing press to make money, but nobody who has any real ideas.

Between the first "stimulus" checks, the bailout, and another stimulus...we're going to be at almost 2 trillion dollars or thereabouts.

That is an incredible amount of money.

How about seed money for windfarms across the country. Putting people to work building them, and lowering people's utility costs in the future. How about guaranteeing small business startup loans or extension loans within reason? How about anything that puts people to work instead of just handing out cash?

Work, man. I don't want a handout. I'd just like to be able to keep my job. Or at least know that there's another one out there if this one tanks.

If I lose my job, nobody's going to give me their 'stimulus' check.
