Why not 'Ravens' and 'Orioles'???

OK, I may get slammed for this, but I really don't care.

[rant]

Ever since I moved to DE from PA, I've noticed that the majority of northern New Castle County residents jump on the Philadelphia teams bandwagon and cheer for the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, etc...

WHY??

Everywhere I go, I see Eagles stickers on cars. And the Phillies' "P" stickers. Etc....

But no Ravens? No Orioles hats being worn?

WHY?

Is it because Philthydelphia is the closest "big" city that has any teams to cheer for? Is it because the majority of NCC residents used to live in Philly? Is it a geographic decision at all? Did you all sign a promisory note pledging allegiance to Philadelphia teams?

What's the deal, people!!??

Did you know that, depending on where you live in Delaware, that Baltimore is probably closer to you than Philly? So why didn't you pick the Baltimore teams to cheer for?

At the grocery store, in lines at movie theaters, etc... I hear people talking about the Eagles like they're the HOME team, like they're the Wilmington Eagles. WTF?

And when people ask me "So, you picking the Eagles to win, right?" like it's not even a decision to make, I blow them away with a response like "No, I hope they lose. This isn't Philadelphia." They stare at me like I just told them I hacked my children up into little pieces last night. They look at me like I a mass murderer who just told them that they're next.

WTF people!!! This isn't Philadelphia. You don't have to be married to that city's teams!!!

Besides, depending on where you live in DE, Baltimore may actually be geographically CLOSER to you than Philadelphia is!

You're allowed to like ANY team, from ANY city.

But despite this fact, 99% of everyone I see or speak to loves the Eagles and Phillies and Flyers....

WHY??

So, feel free to have your own opinions on a team. You don't need to jump on the Philthydelphia teams bandwagon and join the other Philly-loving zombies around here.

It's like an unconcious loyalty with no understanding as to why....

Sorry about that, but it's been bugging me ever since I moved here 10 years ago!

Maybe someone has a logical explanation for the Philly loyalties around here?

If you can enlighten me (not convert me, but enlighten) on the reasoning behind Philadelphia teams here, I'd appreciate it.

(And in case you're wondering, I don't have a favorite team, in any sport. I just like watching sports for the entertainment value. That's it. I don't bet. I don't have any stickers or hats or team clothing. It doesn't matter to me who wins the Super Bowl, or the pennant, or the giant trophy....)

Actually I think (And I dont like the either cities teams) if you are in New Castle County Philly is closer (I live in Elkton Md ) Philly is 42 miles and Baltimore is over 50

Seeing as though my entire family are Philadelphia sports fans, I grew up liking the same teams.. I had an uncle who played for the Hershey Bears when they were the farm team of the Flyers, so I naturally loved the Flyers from the time I could understand hockey...
Personally.. I love the Phils and Flyers, but I HATE the Eagles.. I actually don't like football anyway..

When you live in Northern Delaware, your basic broadcast stations are all out of Philadelphia. The news is out of Philly. The weather is out of Philly. The sports is out of Philly. Therefore, the teams you hear about most are from... wait for it... Philly.

Northern Delaware, media-wise, is a big suburb of Philly.

Not Baltimore.

If our media exposure was out of Baltimore, I'm sure things would be different and we'd hear more about the Ravens and the Orioles.

As for me, I like the Steelers.

You're also talking about a state that has no professional sport teams... So, what's so wrong with picking a team from Philly, Baltimore, DC or even Seattle?? I have a buddy who HATES the Eagles, but LOVES the Seahawks.. Another buddy who HATES the Eagles and LOVES the Raiders... It's all in what you prefer.....

I grew up there. From my door to Philly is 20 minutes.

Baltimore is a long drive from Wilmington.

Plus the Ravens suck. The Orioles suck. And Baltimore sucks for that matter.
+ no hockey team
+ no basketball team

AND.. There's nothing "bandwagon jumping" about loving a team and sticking with them through thick and thin........ Which comes highly with Philly teams...
I may curse the Flyers up and down, but I will NEVER love or even like another hockey team... They have their certain enemy rivals, but I hate alll other teams..

I love my Phils...I was raised a Phils fan, and that's just the way it is. I can get into hockey, and of course it's gotta be the Flyers. Eagles I watch only because my SO & family do...but I'm not a HUGE football fan, I'm not die-hard and I don't lose any sleep when they lose. I guess it depends on what you're raised to like, but for me it's always been Philly.

Not sporting events. Just *events* in general. As the crow flies, Baltimore may be closer, but it's a helluva longer drive. I can be in Philly in 30 minutes, as long as traffic isn't being stupid. Can't say the same for Baltimore.

I seem to know a lot more people who are Redskins or Cowboys fans than Eagles fans.

Cowboys fans are EVERYWHERE.

But so are d cell batteries.
