Ok so I wanna hear from all my fellow gear-heads out there and even you non gear-heads lol. As some of you may know, the NHRA has mandated a new rule that all top fuel cars (Top Fuel Dragster and Funny Car) are to now race to 1000' instead of the usual 1/4 mile which was 1320'. And this weekend at the event in Denver, CO. is the first event that they will be racing to the new distance of 1000'. The reason for this new rule is because of the death of Scott Kalitta at the Englishtown Summer Nationals this year. So what I wanna know is, how do you feel about this new rule?
My take on it is that I agree on the whole safety aspect of the new rule. Safety should definelty always be the number 1 priority. Especially since it also gives the racers another 320' of shutdown room.
And I know that some people say that it doesn't really change anything in the results of the race. But I disagree on that part. I have seen sooooooooooooo many races that have been decided at the old finish line of 1320' where they were photo finishes. Some teams cars are also more first half cars and some are more second half cars. And for the teams that are more second half cars, that kind of puts them at a disadvantage in my opinion.
I also realize that almost all, if not all, of the top fuel teams agree on the new rule and like the new rule. But to me it kinda takes a lil bit out of it for me. I've always been a 1320 kinda guy. And when Wally Parks founded the NHRA back in 1951, it was said that the races would be to a 1/4 mile (1320'). Granted, they definetly weren't going anywhere near as fast are they are these days. But to me it kinda takes away from the history of the sport.
