I know Anne Wortham. She is much respected and well-liked by her peers, both Conservative and Liberal.
Her academic reputation is sterling. Please note, however, that she's not "hinting" that she's a Republican type of Conservative. She's actually a Liberal in the old traditions of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman.
I am, too. Liberalism in the above tradition has nothing to do with what modern day folks think of as being big government, tax and spend Liberals.
Libertarians are more in tune with the Adam Smith/Milton Friedman concepts of Liberalism. Republican Conservatives--I'm registered as one because I just can't bring myself to register as a Libertarian--used to think similarly, but, boy, has this ever changed over the past eight-years.
I disagree with Anne's assessment as to why people voted for Barack Obama, though. It's unlike her to generalize the way she did in her article. Her expertise in Sociology notwithstanding, I think she let her emotions get the best of her.
At best, her premise is questionable; at worst, it's seriously flawed. But, like me, she's as stubborn as they come when it comes to politics.
I tried to cover the topic in my weekly blog column. If you're interested, you can read it
here.
I usually don't debate these political matters. It's mostly a waste of time. Either people are going to agree with me or they're going to say stupid stuff!

Joe Walther
