DENVER - The Democratic National Convention is under way in Denver…but one Democratic delegate from Wisconsin was stripped of her job. Debra Bartoschevich went to Denver, but she's there campaigning for John McCain. She took it a step further agreeing to be featured in a campaign ad. Bartoshevich was a proud Hillary Clinton supporter and an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention. “She had the experience and judgment to be president,” Bartoschevich said. When Hillary ended her campaign, the Waterford nurse decided she'd rather vote for McCain than Barack Obama. Democrats then stripped her of her delegate status. Now, Bartoshevich is batting for the other team. “Now in a first for me, I am supporting a Republican: John McCain,” Bartoschevich said. Bartoshevich defended her decision Monday from Denver, courtesy of the GOP. “I am supporting John McCain because I believe in his candidacy,” Bartoschevich said. Bartoshevich says she's voting with her conscience. “I am not being used. I am not being paid to do this. I am doing this as a volunteer because I believe we have to stand up for our country,” Bartoschevich said. Local Democrats say they doubt the ad will make a difference. “Deb is free to make her own choices but there are many Hillary supporters who back Barack,” Barack Obama supporter Esther Morales said. Bartoshevich believes more Clinton fans will back McCain. “I am the first to come out and I want to let you know it is okay to come out. You can disagree with the party, just support a candidate you can believe in,” Bartoschevich said. Bartoshevich says she'll spend the next few months trying to convince other Hillary supporters to jump ship with her. |
