Diner/Restaurant

What is the difference between the 2? What makes an eatery both a Diner and a Restaurant?

Re: Diner/Restaurant

Diners are traditionally places to get "fast food". That term comes loosely from truckers or travelers of the 50's. If you had 15 mins to spare. You had a meal and coffee before your big haul/travel to the next place.

Restaurants are traditionally places to sit and get waited on. Socializing and getting to know people. Hanging with the family or friends.

Re: Diner/Restaurant

I must begin by saying "I Love Diners" (good diners that is)

In my experience, a diner has good, relatively fast, Homecooked meals...
They seem to specialize in the favorites from the area (breakfast, lunch, dinner and especcially deserts) which gives a taste of home, or a memory of mom or grandmom's cooking...

I believe that the diner does require the couter service to be called a diner, I do not know if it is a rule but seems to be the standard....

And the restaurant additive comes from adding pasta and seafood choices as well as the atmosphere of sit down dining (although there may or maynot be a Juke Box on your table)...

Re: Diner/Restaurant

Diners were originally built to look like railroad dining cars and went from there. Now it means home style and home cooked meals, breakfast any time, and counter service. The more expansive menu makes it a restaurant too.

Re: Diner/Restaurant

Well, Merriam-Webster is no help:

diner: a restaurant usually resembling a dining car in shape

restaurant: a business establishment where meals or refreshments may be purchased

So, still, most diners are NOT shaped like railroad cars anymore.

I guess a diner is a type of restaurant?

Re: Diner/Restaurant

At a diner, you can get waffles at 6pm or a cheesesteak at 9am. With disregard to time, the possibilities are endless.
