Re: Are you a Native of Delaware?

My Grandparents came to Mahanoy City, PA from England and Wales during the late 1800's for the coal mining boom. The boom was over in the 1940's so my parents moved here for work in 1955. My Father designed and installed elevators. So he wanted to be close to Philadelphia. I stayed here, not for any particular reason.

My family actually has a very long history in Delaware and the first of my ancestors to come to the New World is recognized as the first permanent settler of Sussex county after having been given a land grant by the Duke of York.

He was the High Sheriff of Sussex County in 1669 and died of complications resulting from a stroke shortly before he was supposed to meet William Penn who had just previously sailed in on the Friendship.

Yeah, I've done a bit of genealogy.
Whoa...now that's cool!

Bumped for the new members.

Tell us if you're a native or a transplant. Extra points if you can tell us the origins of Return Day!

Re: Are you a Native of Delaware?

Moved to Wilmington from MD when I was 2. I might not have been born here, but it holds my earliest memories. (If I were ever to live anywhere beside DE it would probably be MD).

Lived in Worcester, MA for a year then Central PA for college.

Re: Are you a Native of Delaware?

Me Me Me- I am a native Sussex County girl, college educated, married to my baby daddy and I have all my teeth. Can you see me breaking the stero-type.

I have traveled and lived all around the eastern part of the US but this has always been my home and I can't think of a place I'd rather live and raise my family than eastern Sussex.

Return Day is one of my favorite days. It originates from the tradition of people traveling to Georgetown to vote on Tuesday and then RETURNing again on Thursday to hear the election results read on the circle. I believe we may be the only county in the US that still does this, if not the only we are one of the few. I consider myself a political junkie and am a big fan of the tales that go along with the Return Day Tradition. My husband, the political science major from Salisbury, has never been. This year's is shaping up to be a good one for a first timer.

Is there a prize for my useless knowledge?

Re: Are you a Native of Delaware?

I am from California. Moved to Delaware in Dec 99 with hubby, then boyfriend. He was getting out of the Marines and wanted to come back home, so he brought me along. I was a bit culture shocked to say the least. I was moving from sunny Southern California and moved to Milford in Dec. He better had married me after that! Now I'm raising 2 Delawarians!
