It's something I've never gotten over. I was 12 maybe 13 when it happened. Our family had recently moved from a quiet area of the city to a street adjacent to Maryland Avenue. I use to walk my little dog, Gertie, unleashed all the time when in the old neighboor..traffic was never a problem. On this one day in particular I decided to take my Gertie with me on a walk to the pizza place, which meant walking along Maryland Avenue. There was alot of traffic that day from what I remember, it was around rush hour 5ish. Gertie was walking along side of me and she saw a dog on the other side of Maryland Avenue. Now for those of you not familiar with this road, it's heavily traveled and I wouldn't try to cross that street. Anyway Gertie sees the dog and before I can grab her she darts out into the street. That sound, that horrible shound of her last yelp as the tires of that big truck ran over her. I cried for hours, days...it was one of the worst experiences in my life... I miss her to this day and feel it is my fault her life ended so horridly. I was young and stupid.
