Yes-tax free shopping sounds wonderful. I understand that housing prices are, but hear property taxes are not bad unless you are on the beach. Are utility prices as bad as people are saying? I know DE doesn't tax Social Security income, some states do

What country do you mean to live in? Thanks for the Smyrna tip. What county is that in?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately along with retirement comes arthritis. Enjoy your youth!

I would still live in the US just out in the country with a stream or creek and about 40 acres, most likely in Missouri!

Smryna is in New Castle County and Kent County.

Re: Trying to introduce myself-think I'm doing this wrong

Why are you getting out of the state when you retire? We started looking at states that are more tax friendly. I know property has gone up, but DE is one of the four most tax friendly states. We live in the Western North Carolina mountains and it is beautiful. But our family is in PA and we want to be closer. Besides NC taxes and house prices are getting so high. If I could be nearer my kids and afford to retire here, I would.

Thank you-I am still nto figure out how to post and reply, etc. Guess I'll learn. I would love to hear from more people who live in active adult communities and how they like them and the state.

Re: Trying to introduce myself-think I'm doing this wrong

Thank you for your offer to help. We can't afford to live in MD I believe. Delaware is more tax friendly. We are looking for an Active Adult community but want to own the land. We don't want to "land lease". Most of the communities I've found on the web are landlease, but they don't tell you that when you are researching. What is it like in Sussex county vs the other two. We like rural, but still need shopping for at least food. A small town atmosphere would be nice, but worry about I hear about chicken farms and smell, etc.I also hear that health care is bad in Delaware-is this really true?

Delaware is full of great places to live, the tax base is super low, and it's a very small state so getting to places is easy, sans the traffic congestion in certain areas and at certain times of the year.

There are many retirement communities in Sussex County, Delware's largest and southern most County.

In any case, welcome ... I look forward to a positive exchange.
It's so nice to hear from someone who says DE is an awsome place to live. A lot of the adult communities are in Sussex county, but are the chicken farms there really smelly? We kind of like a slower pace now that we are in our 60's, but still would like to be a nice small town that has downhome character. Unfortunately we still need to eat and occassionaly shop, would we have to drive forever to even go out to dinner in Sussex County? Thanks!

Good luck in your decision.
Yes-low taxes and tax free shopping are a big plus for someone retiring. I know housing prices have gone way up. Don't think we can afford living near a beach, but wouldn't mind it. I am use to high traffic in season in the mountains of Western NC. The weekends are worse, but we enjoy living in the woods on three wooded acres-just can't retire in this big house and want to be near our grandkids in PA. The adult communities in NC are very expensive and we can't afford them. Thanks.
