They have adjustable Thermostats these days you know, need help installing one ? *Seriously though, a programmable Thermostat for when you're sleeping or not at home, goes a long way.

| | | $120.00 for a 980 sq.ft. bungalow. Crap insulation + new windows. The furnace is only 2 years old. Thermostat is adjustable. It's set for 60 at night and when we're at work/school and 65 all other times. I expect a larger bill next month as my daughter has had 2 weekends of friends overnight and for some reason, they think 65 is cold!

| | I have a 100 sq ft rancher, no gas line, electric base broad heat, wood stove from the mid 80s---the kind that makes the whole Hood smell great and wound not pass EPA now. I would guess that I use it about 25 per cent of the time. I only use it when it below 30. Wood is not cheap and above 35 I have to open widows.
I never use the electric base board; I have read that they are terribly extensive to run. I use portable oil radiators and you know I like them. Parts of the house that occupy I keep at 68, the other parts at 60. My electric bill are between 70-85 dollars, and I use about a cord and a half of wood each year

| | We have a ranch and have just converted our screen porch into a family room. There's no heat in there yet (woodburning stove going in soon) and have been running 2 space heaters in the evening. Our electric charges were $157.27 and gas was $125.84 (Delmarva).
We also have a separate meter for my husband's home office. His computers suck up WAY too much electricity. I try not to look at that bill. Ever.

| | The person(s) that remodeled this house (before we moved in) saw fit to put 2 of the thermostats directly above the baseboard heaters... (smart - those 3 rooms rarely get warmer than about 50 unless you crank the heat, which I refuse to do).
The 3 bedrooms are all controlled by one thermostat (set at about 58). The heaters are right below the windows.
I have a propane heater that I use occasionally on really cold days, mostly on weekends.... we are not home and awake enough during the week for it to make a difference.... But it does a nice job if you like sitting in the dining area sweating your brains out.
Mostly, I walk around my house in lots of clothes until I can afford to spend the money to fix some of the things that the "Git-R-Done" Handyman did before we bought the place.

| | Don't forget, there has been a pretty hefty rate increase by the power companies. You arte probably consuming less but paying more.

| | | [quote=mastiffmom;162190]Okay, I pulled out my nemesis, the Delmarva bill.
Electric - $376.83
Gas - $177.35
I live in a 2 story (3 if you include the finished basement) monster that WASTES heat. Only 10 years old so still okay on the windows. You might not want to trust that the windows are okay since the house (I'm assuming that's what you meant) is only 10 y.o. My house was only 10 y.o. when I broke down and got new windows. When they put the new windows in I found out why my heat bill had been so high; the builders cut out holes for the windows that were 1 inch too big all around. They filled in around the windows with caulk. Talk about the wind whistling through! I LOVE my new windows!!! It sounds like our houses are similar too, 2 story w/the full finished basement; windows are a huge initial investment but really pay out in the end.

| | | Our bill last month was $288; DE Electrical Cooperative. We live in a 2000 sqft modular home that's almost 3 years old. Everything is electric, heat, hot water, water pump, ect. We also have 6 "adults" that live in the house. 2 of them cannot figure out how to turn anything off if they aren't using it, i.e. lights, tvs, stereos.
I keep the thermostat at 62 at night and when no one is home during the day, it rarely goes above 65 unless my mom or mom in law are visiting and then it has to go up to 70.
I think our bill is reasonable considering we don't pay sewer, gas, oil etc. February and January are typically our highest months, the latest bill was just for December.....but my mom was visiting for 3 weeks so the heat was up a good part of the month. We'll see what January's bill brings.

| | | I have to check my bill I forget what it was but I'm telling you.... you guys are freezing me to death just reading what you keep your houses at!!!!
My house is NEVER below 70 and if I'm cold, I have NO problem cranking it up to 75. I hate walking around my house bundled up and freezing and trust me, below 70 I'm cold. I don't live with a man so I don't have to hear him complain he's hot or anything. But I will say this, I keep my house around 70 - 75 year round, even during the summer when I have the air on. I like to be comfortable in my home, not hot and not cold. I HATE being cold.

| | | I would love to get new windows. I know they could be better than they are. The house is about 3200 sq feet with the basement. We have this lovely family room with the big old heat wasting vaulted ceiling.
I told DH the other night, note to self - next home, if there is a next home will not have vaulted ceilings. We lose so much heat up there.
We keep our house between 63 and 66 degrees. | | |
