So how come most girls I ask now pretty much expect their engagement rings to cost 2 but most likely 3 months of their fiancee's salary?

That seems ludicrous. Why do couples get into a big debt over a stupid piece of jewelry? Wouldn't that money be better off being used to pay for a down payment on a house or paying off a high interest credit card?

I'd say 1 month to 6 weeks salary for a ring. MAX.

You're dating the wrong kind of girl if she actually thinks the engagement ring price makes a difference. Shallow, superficial & high maintenance comes to mind. Thank goodness I found one of the good ones.

Our wedding bands are tattooed... Don't come off, don't bend or catch on anything when you are working on the cars. Was a wedding present from my tattoo artist, didn't cost a dime. But, oh, the PAIN when he got to the part under the finger....

(I can't wear most jewelry.)

I'm with Tarkus on this..

My wife isn't the materialistic type, thank god...... Her engagement ring was reasonable, thanks to one of the best jewelry sales*WO*man at Robbins Diamonds.. My wife would prefer a new vacuum over jewelry anyday.....
Dead serious....

Much like Valentines Day was a scam from the card companies- the jewelry rule is a scam from the jewelers. Everybody wants in your pocket! Follow your heart.

Personally I think engagement rings on the whole are a stupid idea, at least the expensive diamonds. Now, I can see a nice, tasteful birthstone or other token ring, but not the monster, shine in your face, bigger than the knuckle rock. I would rather put the money into something for both of us. Besides, I find it amazing that the damned things can't even be pawned on ebay for more than one tenth of the original price. What a racket!

No thanks, give me a nice honeymoon, a new bedroom set, the ability to invite more people to the wedding...those things actually mean something.

And if the girl is dead set on the huge diamond, she doesn't have to know where it came from, really...go on ebay...just check it out. You can save a bundle buying it used.

(am I going to be kicked out of the 'girly-girl' club now?)

i agree !!! if a woman is so concerned about the price of the ring, then she is shallow and superficial. i dont think you should cheap-out either but 3 months salary??!!!
no way. and someone mentioned putting that money toward a house instead of starting out your marriage in debt. it is a great idea !!

i have always found the ring selection at Cowtown, NJ to be quite good.
i just cant afford that high-falutin' jewelry over there.

We skipped the engagement ring - I'm just not that into jewelry. Our entire wedding was under $2000, including rings, ceremony, reception and the overnight stay at the B&B where we eloped. We were living fairly frugally and the idea of blowing all that money on one day or on one ring seemed beyond ridiculous.

DH got my engagement ring at Janvier...I actually picked it out (it's a trillion/triangle shape). fantastic service there.

I love my ring and I don't think it bothered him to spend a bit of cash on it. I like the bling, baby!

We had a pretty nice wedding, if I do say so myself...and it was completely debt free in the end (with us paying a bunch into it and a few gifts from our parents and DH's grandmother).

I think it's insane when people refinance their mortgage, per se, just to have their dream day. Come on, people....priorities.

I had the big bling too, not by my request he just bought it himself from Janvier too, it was beautiful i still have it in a safe deposit box along with some other goodies, but i was afraid to wear it all the time, so i only wore it when we were out,or special occasions, he had expensive taste, so i always got the good stuff.

man lots of Janvier peeps, i didn't mention Dave cause he's just my jeweler, we hang out any time we can, he's the king of trolley square! I only bought maybe 1 necklace from him (good deal), we usually go to Lenny at DelHaven in Concord Mall.

Jewelry is a waste on me... even the platinum that I can wear.

A day of drag racing at the track, that is money well spent on me... and car parts.

If you are afraid to wear it, you shouldn't have it or at least should have it insured. Mine is nice and I wear it every day. A ring is a symbol and that is all. It does not make you any more married or committed.

I'd rather have a tattoo than put us both in debt over a big expensive wedding set. A house is a great idea. Something that would be for us both is also a good idea.

There were a lot of people telling me to NOT where my ring when I was at work because it was a hazard.... If for any reason something happened to my finger, they might have to cut the ring off.. I say cut it off...

I never understood that...

Only time I take my ring off is when I'm in the shower, washing my hands or putting lotion on my hands.. I hate when stuff gets up under the ring...
