| | If Delaware is in a State of Emergency, school will not have to be made up
But I think the schools will end up making up at least 2 days after this week's storm is over, JMO

| | | We have five days built into the school year. Today is our fifth day used. So, unless they forgive the extra days needed for this new storm, we'll be making days up for sure.

| | | My kids' school closed a few extra days for December's storm due to back roads supposedly being impassable. So I'm sure they'll have to make up some days missed from this weekend's storm, and tonight's mess....

| | | My friend and I have been going back and forth about the kids driving us crazy being home all this extra time.
But we are passifying ourselves with thoughts of the kids being in school and graduations happening into July, that way we get to enjoy some summer on our own LOL
And to answer the original question, it doesn't interfere with my vacation time. I do not plan vacation until August and other than that it's just time I take off for long weekends.

| | | It seems most Delaware schools are closed Friday and Monday for President's Day anyway.
My daughter is Cecil County and they are only closed Monday for President's Day. I suspect my daughter will be out of school for the rest of this week tho. But thankfully MD does build in more snow days because of the number of back roads. | Re: Schools may have to make up time.

| | I love it when my kids get snow days but this is getting ridiculous. I usually watch my DVR'd shows/movies after they head to bed but I haven't had the chance to catch up with them staying up all hours. I think my DVR is nearing capacity.... help. | Re: Schools may have to make up time.

But I think the schools will end up making up at least 2 days after this week's storm is over, JMO The state must complete 178 days for the kids.So they may have to give up some of the time during Easter Brake. That's better then in June when it get's very hot with no Air Conditioning in most schools.

I'm taking my kids to London to visit my family and we are doing mini breaks in Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. We are leaving March 31 and coming back late night on April 12. Tickets are already purchased and plans are made.... I will not be happy if they make up days over Spring Break. Oh no!!! | Re: Schools may have to make up time.

| | I dont have to make up any. Instead the professors just try and cram all the stuff we missed into the rest of the days And its as if we weren't already crunched for time cause we have 10 week terms instead of 16 week terms

They figured the majority of students lived on campus so they'd just have to trudge their way through a foot of snow to get to class. In my 4 years up there we only had 1 half day due to weather. Again, these were Connecticut winters too! | Re: Schools may have to make up time.

| | Brandywine School District's Superintendent addressed this issue on the BSD web site..... Dear BSD Community, Over the past days, my staff and I have received several phone calls regarding snow days from concerned parents. In the interest of keeping the entire BSD community updated, I thought I would take this opportunity to explain the student calendar and how decisions on school closings are made.
Title 14 of the Delaware Code requires that students receive a mandated number of instructional hours each year. When we create our school calendars each fall, we build in surplus hours to compensate for snow days or other emergencies that could arise. In a typical year, the surplus hours more than cover any missed days; however, unusual circumstances such as the ones we are seeing this winter present additional challenges. Additionally, there is a possibility that the State could forgive school districts one or more of their missed days (for example, if school had to remain closed due to a State of Emergency). That decision will not be made until later in the school year.
In the event that we exhaust our surplus hours, we have several options to make up the lost learning time. At this point in the school calendar, our best two options may be to add days to the end of the year or to add hours to existing school days. It is premature to speculate about this decision now, but it appears that it may be something we need to address. Once we have all the information we need, we will be sure to communicate any decisions regarding student attendance requirements to everyone affected – students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and district office.
I want to assure you that every decision we make – whether it’s about snow days, bus routes, curriculum, or school nutrition – is made with the well-being and safety of our children in mind. Closing school for a snow day is not a decision that I take lightly. We must consider the safety of our children first and foremost. Even when school grounds themselves are clear and ready to receive students, the surrounding neighborhood streets and sidewalks may not be safe.
I appreciate your continued patience as we navigate through this challenging weather pattern together.
I'm sure the other districts are thinking the same thing.

link to above message... Brandywine School District | Superintendent Messages JMO, but I kind of hope they just extend the day for a few minutes or however they would do that. Since it is only mid Feb, and lots more winter still ahead, we probably will have another snow day or two. At this rate, the kids will be in school until July!!! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
