Home Improvement Recommendations

Well, I've procrastinated long enough and really need to get the flooring replaced in my home. I'm looking to replace the bedroom carpeting now and the other parts of the house once I have finished painting the other rooms (which I will probably start doing next month).

Does anyone have any recommendations of a good, yet not-too-expensive flooring business in the area? I'm looking for tough, wear-resistant, stain-resistant carpeting (it doesn't have to be luxurious, just dog-resistant) and laminate flooring.

Also, has anyone installed their own laminate flooring? Was it hard/easy/impossible?

Any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Home Improvement Recommendations

We used AirBase Carpetmart to get carpeting for our heavy-traffic family room and was very happy with the quality and the cost!

My husband and father installed snap-lock wood laminate in our kitchen and it was VERY easy. They are doing it again in my parent's family room before putting the house up for sale. It's not too difficult.

Were you thinking the snaplock laminate or just laminate in general?

Re: Home Improvement Recommendations

You've been to my house and seen my carpeting so you can decide yes or no, but when I had my water damage and remodeled I went to Air Base Carpet right up the road from me. I got the living room/dining room carpet and basement carpet (including steps) for a ridiculously low price. I wish I could remember exactly what it was, but all I can remember is that I went there, picked it out, told them that I had another appt. and they said they would figure out the price and call me. When they called and gave me the price I had to make sure that it was the INSTALLED price because I couldn't believe it was so cheap. I knew I didn't have a lot of money to work with, and that w/the animals I needed something heavy duty, so I went to the remnants side of the store. I really think I did well there. Now, if you do decide to use them one thing you should remember is that they will nickel/dime you if they can for stupid little things so just listen carefully and ask a lot of questions when it comes to the 'extras' like them moving furniture, etc.

Re: Home Improvement Recommendations

Okay, it looks like everyone is giving the same advice I did...but seriously, if you are thinking about putting in laminate, I want to do my family room floor. You help me and I'll help you? Or would that be the blind leading the blind?

Re: Home Improvement Recommendations

Witchy. For carpet do NOT use Empire. They SUCK and are a rip off. We used Air base before but had Hopes brother install it and and had no problems with the carpet, of course about a year later we decided we wanted 2 inch hard wood put in the living room and dining area. Hope's Father installed it and it came out beautiful. He also did Italian marble in our kitchen that is exquisite. I will ask him if he is interested. We have laminate in the dining room in the mountains and I hate it, it just looks cheap IMO. We have cases of it to get rid of if anyone is interested in it.
