A friend of mine recently got a new car. I noticed he had his lights on as we were driving and as it was daytime, I informed him in case he didn't realize it. He responded, "oh, those are the daytime running lights, most newer cars have them."
Now, I've noticed this before, but his non-chalant attitude made me wonder why no one seems to be perturbed by this but me. I mean, these lights accomplish nothing but using more energy. How much more visible can you be when the sun is shining on your car? I see it!! The lights do nothing to make it "more" visible to other drivers.
Is anybody else annoyed by this "new, important" tecnology? What a waste....
I'd have to see data on whether the daytime lamps drain a car battery significantly more quickly than without, but I can say that my '03 Toyota has the lamps and it's had the same battery for 105k now, so...
One thing I will say is...when you get used to having your day lamps come on all the time, you can forget that you still need to turn your headlights on at night. The daytime lamps are NOT as bright as standard low-beam. I know I do it sometimes, and that in itself can be a safety issue.

DRLs usually run at a lower intensity than normal low beams. I disconnected my DRLs on my truck because you can't shut them off even when parked if the engine is running, so if I want to be more visible, I just turn my headlights on. In the old days, when you saw a headlight on during the day, it would get your attention and make you look for a motorcycle. Since the proliferation of DRLs, even motorcycles get lost in the sea of them and its hard to distinguish when they are coming. Now to be more visible during the day, motorcycles are allowed to use headlight modulators which modulate the headlight.
click your emergency brake one notch that should shut the DRL's off

On my Toyota I can do that, but it has to be started with the e-brake on. So with DRLs if I drive somewhere and want to park with the engine runnning and lights off, I'd have to turn off the engine, click the e-brake, then start the engine again. Easier to just disconnect 'em. My old Pontiac Gran Prix, the e-brake could be pulled anytime to turn off DRLs.
Mine definitely get brighter when you turn the actual headlamps on. My wife didn't believe me either. She's driving, I said "How can you see? Turn your lights on!"
