Beauty pageants don't represent the modern woman?

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/americ....ap/index.html

Although Miss America slipped, fell, and as booed by the crowd during her interview, the big news of this year's Miss Universe pageant was that three time crown winner Sweden did not participate. Why? They felt that the pageant does not represent the modern women. Other protests went on outside, where protesters yelled yelled "Neither ugly nor beautiful, should a woman be considered an object!"

What are your thoughts?

Re: Beauty pageants don't represent the modern woman?

I think it is disgusting that the a woman represents the USA or wherever in a pageant on her looks. Go find someone that is doing something for her community or working towards a goal, not a crown. A mother who works 2 jobs to make ends meet for her and her children because the kids dad walked out on them and left them with no money. I know a woman I have known for years, last year her house burnt down and she lost 90% of her belongings, her kids were scattered across two counties until the new house was build. In between working 2 sometimes 3 jobs she would go work on the house along side her husband and family. Took them a year to get in their house. They just got in their house. To me she is the most wonderful person and deserves that crown than any so called beauty with their tummy tucks and face lifts that walks down the aisle at that pagent.

Re: Beauty pageants don't represent the modern woman?

I just wish they'd be honest about what the majority of these pageants are: BEAUTY pageants...Nobody cares about your talent! Nobody cares that you feed kittens! Nobody cares that you want world peace! Just put on this pretty dress, then this swimsuit, parade around for a few minutes (try not to fall), then get off the stage. There are mediocre looking girls that'll never get the chance to wear those tiaras, but i'm certain they'd be more deserving.

That said, I actually enjoy watching pageants (I'm gay, so it's probably not for the same reasons as the other guys!)

Re: Beauty pageants don't represent the modern woman?

I used to be opposed to beauty pageants and still am to a degree. The main point of it is to have fun and they win prizes (money, scholarships, etc). I think a lot of people that compete are very pretty. Not mediocre. As long as the person is having fun and enjoys participating then why should it bother me?

(This applies to child beauty pageants) I just can't stand it when parents are the ones that feel the need to prove something and the child is not wanting to participate, that is when beauty pageants are not fun.
