I'm hesitant to give a lot of identifying details here, but I can at least say hi and give some info to put my responses in perspective!

I'm "Abuela", though don't let the screen name fool you - it's what my two granddaughters call me, but I'm the blanquita of the family (an Appalachian Jewish white girl who sucks at speaking Spanish, at that! though I do make a fantastic arroz con gandules...). I'm a teacher of computer-related topics, and edging very close to my 50th birthday which is freaking me out a bit. This past August, I was finally allowed to marry the love of my life in California, though it's not recognized in Delaware. She's in a law enforcement related job, and is already at peace with this whole "AARP qualified" stuff, though it's easier for her since her Spanish genes cause most folks to think that she's somewhere in her 30's though in fact her daughter is that age. We live in a cool old house in a small town with our two rescued pugs, and we hope to add a third larger rescued dog to our family soon. Our lives are very focused on our grandchildren (ages 2.5 and a few weeks shy of 13), who live with us on weekends and other times as needed. I'm slightly internet addicted and enjoy an occasional martini. My Spouse is slightly TV and Playstation/Wii addicted and enjoys a few too many donuts. We're overall pretty boring, but still relatively nice people.

I joined to learn more about things going on in DE, both in terms of activities and events, and to get an idea about what folks think about living in these strange and exciting and frightening times.

It's good to "meet" you all!

Don't be afraid of 50; my mom's doing so great 7 years after it, it's kinda something to look forward to here.

Arroz con gandules, you say...

I like you already (although where I come from we call it "guandú").

Welcome to the site! Thanks for the intro about yourself. Not everyone introduces themselves so nicely.

I hope you enjoy yourself here. There are a lot of really wonderful people on here. We even get together in real life at times. It's more than a forum for a lot of us, it's a community and friends. Congrats on your marriage and I wish you a life time of happiness!

Panama girl, where *I* come from we call it beans and rice, but my Spouse if Puerto Rican and Dominican and I've learned to fix some traditional foods from there!

Tracy, I love that storybook cover. The girl looks a lot like "ElderGrand" (my almost-13yo granddaughter), or at least how she looked a few years ago before the bricks on her head and duct-tape around her chest stopped working and she dared to start looking like a Cool Teen. But the Abuela... ay dios mio, at least I look at lot younger than that - the gray hasn't taken over nearly so much!

Motherof3, thanks for the welcome. I LOVE your little descriptor of "meanest mom ever." I tell folks (and my grandkids) all the time that I'm the MEAN grandmother (meaning, the one who isn't going to cave to their whining and wheedling and toddler or teenager fits). Glad to meet a "mean" mom!

we have many different kinds of people...from different backgrounds...and all have our own opinion on various topics...and for the most part...we all seem to get along and respect each other
