Moving to DE?

Hi everybody,
I've recently been offered a good job in New Castle County and I'm considering moving to DL. Donīt know the state very well so I would appreciate any advice as to where to live and a good middle/high school for the children. I would be working in the Wilmington area. Is it still true that Wilmington has one the highest crime rates of the northeast of the country? Comments like this together with the proximity to Salem's nuclear plant in NJ are putting me off. Hope to get some encouraging words from you!!!!! Tnx

Re: Moving to DL?

where's DL??????? I'm just kidding!!!!! Welcome to TD Traveller. I was not aware that Wilmington had one of the highest crime rate in the northeast. wow....even higher than NYC or Philly? That's amazing! Anyway, there are lots of nice places to live in Delaware and lots of not so nice places. I'm assuming that since you've been offered a good job, you'll be making a nice income. You may want to check out Hockessin or Pike Creek. Newark also has some very nice areas. There are also some very nice houses south of the C & D Canal. We had another member recently asking a similliar question. You might find this thread helpful. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

Re: Moving to DL?

A lot depends on how much house you can afford. As far as the crime rate, in general the crime is out of control in the city of Wilmington with a few exceptions. If you stay in the suburbs crime is not a concern with the exception of a few areas I would stay clear of, and the Rt. 13 and Rt 9 corridor come to mind. (Numerous seedy motels with rampant prostitution and drug use).

These are some of the High Schools I would stay clear of if possible:
Glasgow H.S.
Christiana H.S.
William Penn H.S.
Mount Pleasant H.S.

A couple I like:
Concord H.S.
Brandywine H.S.

Iggy....
Please clarify your statement
Rte 9 north of the 295 overpass...
please don't lump in Historic new Castle with the seedy part of 9....
New Castle City has some beautiful homes, its own police force, and that "First State" charm you can get nowhere else....

I do agree wholeheartedly about the schools though.

Re: Moving to DL?

Is there a sudden shortage of real estate agents?

Welcome travellerdl.
It sounds like you are not from this region of the US if you are worried about nuclear facilities. So, if you can give us some info of what you are looking for it would help us to help you. (city, rural, suburbs, land, waterfront, beaches, etc.) Delaware has it all and the prices can be reasonably low to multi-million dollar homes.

As for schools... we have public schools in local districts as well as some nice private schools....again, all depends what you are specifically looking for.

Good luck!

Re: Moving to DL?

Welcome to TalkDE, traveller.

I very seriously doubt that Wilmington DE, even with all it's problems, has the highest crime rate of the Northeast in the country. Even not counting New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia, I think Newark, NJ or Trenton, NJ would get the honor before any place in DE.

Re: Moving to DL?

Zip, I didn't mean to offend and I agree that the historic area of New Castle is a great area to live. I didn't intend to lump you in with the Rt. 9 "corridor". I just wouldn't be too choked up about my kids going to William Penn H.S., although that school has noticeably improved over the last several years.
