My Mood: | | | Re: Moving to DE? One thing to keep in mind about school districts here is that they are, for the most part, grossly underfunded. See, we pay next to nothing in property tax, and then most times that local school districts engage in a referendum to increase revenue, people vote against it. Apparently, investing in the future of our kids takes second fiddle to a daily latte.
Coming from another area, you may be surprised at the lack of opportunity in some of our public schools. I was a public school kid until they took away the Gifted & Talented program in my district, pretty much cutting out the only chance I had to be stimulated and challenged in class. My parents enrolled me in a private high school, and I could give you a laundry list of opportunities I had there that my best friend, who remained in our local district was never offered.
That being said, I've heard excellent things about certain Charter schools - specifically Wilmington Charter, Charter of Newark, and Cab Calloway. They do not charge tuition, but have a more developed curriculum and stricter behavior policies.

When I was in a public DE high school, I had ONE (yes, that is one) text book. There wasn't enough money for the rest of the classes I as in to issue text books. That meant what work we did, we did during school hours. No chapter reading homework, nothing like that. We lagged far, far behind other schools just because of the slow pace we had to work at because the school didn't have money for books.
And then they threatened to cut all our sports and extracurricular activities.
That referendum to get more money for the schools never did pass until a few years after I graduated, and they'd been trying to pass it since before my Freshman year.
Meanwhile, out-of-staters and their kids kept flooding the district. They honestly could not keep up with the number of new enrollments. The new high school was completed halfway through my senior year. The next year, it was already overcrowded. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Pythoness For This Useful Post: | |

FH and his best friend went to Cab. He's certainly not and never was a bad kid. In fact, most of his friends from Cab are what is known as "straight edge" - no drugs, no drinking, no smoking. My SO and most of our good friends went to Wilmington Charter.. and I haven't ever heard them say anything about either being a bad school, or having bad kids in it.
At least, they never beat people with trashcans after losing a football game. (Did they have a football team?) |
