The other morning I was dreaming I was in a diner with someone whose face I can’t remember… I kept trying to place an order but something always interrupted me. When I finally got it in it took forever to arrive, and when it DID arrive… I woke up.
I’m still craving what I ordered in my dream: two eggs over easy, bacon, a biscuit with gravy. That’s what I wanted when I went to the kitchen. What I got was barely warm cafe au lait and soft-rye toast with pseudo-butter spread. Blergh. I want greasy food and I want it now!
Oh, don’t you dare start with the “cholesterol and saturated fat are bad for you” crap! I know that! I haven’t eaten anything made with anything but healthy shit in months! Why? One, because I’m trying to get my family to eat healthier food than they did before I joined them, two because I’m perfectly aware that I’ve gained weight since I moved to the US.
I could walk to everything I needed in Panama; here you absolutely have to have a car even to get to the shopping center that’s just half a mile away - or risk getting run over by an airhead soccer mom driving an ‘05 SUV who’s more interested in talking on her cell phone than in keeping her eyes on the fucking road.
I’m doing about half of the grocery shopping for the family because a) I live here too so I should contribute, b) money is tight so my $400/month income is a real help. I cheat on the grocery bill, however: I buy staple foods at the dollar store. Hey, elbow macaroni, spaghetti and plain white rice are all $1 for a 2-lb bag there! That’s still cheaper than the 10 for 10 aisle at the supermarket!
As for eggs, there’s not much difference between a medium and a large egg lately so I’d rather pay $1/doz.
Cake, muffin, brownie and complete-pancake mixes? Same! I’ve made brownies three times in the last month.
Smoked or polish sausage too, one package feeds the four of us at any given mealtime. Hot dogs are the poor man’s sausage, they get sliced, browned, thrown into tomato sauce and added to macaroni.
Frozen veggies? You bet! Last week I bough half a dozen bags and I still have some in the freezer.
Tomato sauce? Well, since the last time we bought almost two cases I don’t see us needing to buy any until almost the New Year.
Cheese slices? Sure! I don’t just use them for sandwiches, they melt nicely into pastas and casseroles or as an au gratin cover for potatoes…
I feel proud of myself now…. but I still want my eggs with bacon, biscuits and gravy!

I haven’t been able to get any work done this week.
I need an incentive. Before you say “money” I will say I’m not earning enough to make it really worthwhile, although the income does help.

Once upon a midnight dreary,
while I websurfed with eyes bleary
Throughout all my kinky or curious
bookmarked pornographic store,
Suddenly I saw a flashing
message that had my teeth gnashing,
Realizing it was stopping,
stopping me from viewing more.
“This is SO not fair!” I cursed them,
“Give me back my free hardcore!”
Quoth the server…

I quit smoking on my wedding day.
The cravings are really bad right now.
